One of the best free all round media programs we have found is dBPoweramp's Audio Player and Music Converter which are very comprehensive in functions.
dBPoweramp ( http://www.dbpoweramp.com ) also provides trialware add-ons such as a Power Pack, Sveta Portable Audio (includes dBpowerAMP Music Converter and Power Pack) and CD Writer which add extra functionality.
Possibly one of the best free ripping programs is Exact Audio Copy.
EAC provides one of the most accurate CD rippers we have found, checking, comparing and repairing your original music it then uses an external program such as Lame to compress files.
Lame is a command line mp3 compression program, extract Lame to a folder on your hard drive first, then install EAC which will provide the GUI (Windows) interface. Two simpler Lame frontends are also listed.
